AC/DC are coming home! The rock legends will play their first Scottish gig in eight years at Hampden Park on June 30. With the massive success of their 2008 album Black Ice, fans are itching to see and hear the band perform their new album live, but after nearly seven months of the Black Ice Tour, many fans are calling it a greatest hits tour.
Black Ice Success
The Black Ice album has sold over 8 million copies* and, on release, went straight to number one in 29 countries’ sales charts. It’s their seventeenth studio album since their debut High Voltage in 1975. Fans and reviewers have been wowed by it, with Rolling Stone saying it’s their best album since 1981’s For Those About To Rock.

It’s fitting that AC/DC should return to Scotland in Homecoming year and revisit their old stomping ground. Original singer Bon Scott, who died in 1980, was born in Kirriemuir, and brothers Angus (lead guitar) and Malcolm (rhythm guitar) Young were born in Cranhill, Glasgow and emigrated to Australia in 1963.
They have never forgotten their Scottish heritage. Bagpipes were featured on 1975’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If you Wanna Rock n Roll), and they continue to be inspired by the land of their birth. Speaking about the title of the Black Ice album, Angus said, “It rolled off the tongue – it reminds me of radio warnings up north of black ice. It was deadly stuff.”*

So strong is the band’s connection with Scotland that Member of the Scottish Parliament Christine Grahame has lodged the AC/DC We Salute You motion in the Scottish Parliament. It recognises the band’s “significant musical contribution”, notes their growing popularity, and “acknowledges the musical inspiration.”
Black Ice in the UK
When dates were first released Scotland missed out, but after many online petitions, particularly from rockradioscotland.co.uk, and appeals from old and new fans alike, fans’ anger and disappointment faded quickly when the band finally announced a Scottish date.
The Black Ice world tour takes in only 43 dates, which is relatively short for a rock band. This, coupled with the band’s eight year long touring and album absence has made this tour one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated.
There were rumours that the rock supergroup would play festival gigs whilst in the country. Both T in the Park and the Reading festival were named as possibilities and fans were urged not to buy tickets in the hope of seeing their heroes. Their festival absence is another reason why their stadium gigs are causing such a buzz among their fans and the rock community.
Greatest Hits Tour
Gig reports and reviews of the Black Ice Tour describe a stunning setlist and show. Around five songs from the Black Ice album make the list, but it’s the classics everyone wants to hear and they’re there in abundance. Make no mistake; this is a greatest hits tour by any other name. With songs such as Back In Black, You Shook Me All Night Long, Highway To Hell, For Those About To Rock, and Whole Lotta Rosie, a packed Hampden is going to get the rocking of its life.
Stunning Stageshow
Since AC/DC announced they would play Hampden, fans have anticipated what kind of show could accompany such an awesome display of hard rock. As usual, the visuals are stunning. The stage is dominated by a giant steam locomotive that crashes onto the stage in flames. During Whole Lotta Rosie, a giant inflatable woman (obviously Rosie) appears. Hampden will see Rosie MkII as the first one was destroyed at a US gig when flamepots set it alight. And, of course, the obligatory cannons will grace the stage at the end of For Those About To Rock.
AC/DC may show signs of ageing, but inside they’re still as hard-rockin’ as they ever were. With a huge selling, critically acclaimed new album, sell out concerts all over the world, the Hampden crowd is set to experience one of the most explosive rock gigs Scotland has ever seen.
